It's so sad. The entire field is overpopulated by low-functioning people who only want to teach, not investigate. They peddle half-assed ideas that sound great when bleated in chorus, but ignore the fundamental problem at hand. Hey man, take a breath before i dunk you underwater for ten minutes. It's gotta help, right? Right? *hides the snorkel* RIGHT??
The vaccine is evidence that good people still do good work. The mask mandate without providing every American with an ample supply of N95s is an extreme failure of science to speak up.

Yeah, that's the thing. For the masks that most people still use, doubling it up will just increase restriction and force completely unfiltered air out the sides. Maybe hot gluing them to your face will be the next recommended guidance.

Iowa has reached the point of having more days without a COVID death than with one. We've been on a great trend since about mid November. There's obviously been a lot of political and economic damage over the past year, but maybe the end is in sight. That's not to say we all won't probably have to deal with it as a new fact of life, but better a new normal than no normal at all.

I am less optimistic, but no less hopeful. I think a lull is coming. The real issue is that covid is knocking, always knocking. And someone will open that door. The vaccines are huge, but they will need updates, rapid responsiveness to deal with successful variants.
Worse, i still have this ... I wouldn't call it a fear because i crave carnage and living out my days in the death throes of the human race ... concern about COVID's ability to infect the CNS. That's a rare feature for viruses: rabies and herpes for example. The brain *can* eliminate virally infected neurons, but the process takes time. So im left wondering what happens if it re-emerges. A lip blister? Or does the brain just kinda start swelling? Might be a big nothing.

That's kind of what I was getting at, though. We live with herpes and rabies as facts of life. They're bad things to have, but not "close all the businesses and hide in the basement" bad. We deal. The world is a dangerous place.
