Question on evacuation - Trub Lou - 08-25-2020

This is probably a timely topic for our Texas brethren, but after the CF that moved through Eastern Iowa earlier this month, I got to thinking about evacuation orders and such.  With the current normalization of looting and theft, and the discouragement of police even bothering to do anything regarding property related crimes, would you actually evacuate your home or business for a weather event?

I'm not sure I would.  Too many horror stories about places being completely cleaned out while they're unattended, and I fear it's just getting worse.  I'd probably be inclined to get armed and prepared as well as I could, send the family on their way to somewhere safe, and ride shit out.  If I can send a couple of looters RMA to their maker for a refurb in the process, then great.  People around here are generally still pretty good, so I don't have any real day-to-day anxiety over this kind of thing, but if a mass evacuation order came out, it seems like it would be a beacon for unsavory sorts to start looking for homes with no activity.

As far inland as I am, nothing could make me leave. But I've also never lived on the coast or ridden out a massive storm either. I would prolly still want to stay.

I've ridden out a Cat 2 at a friend's place. It really depends on how solidly your house is built and how susceptible to flooding it is.

Cat 2? That's probably impressive for people not in eastern Iowa. Big Grin

J/K - at some point, it's just a shit ton of wind, and you gosta look out for that's flyin' at you!

I've seen the damage first hand.
A cat 3 or above, you better be high above any flood dangers.
Rain or surge.
AND in a serious structure.
A cat 5?
Nope. No way I am in a coastal location for a cat 5.

Look at this video we took of Mexico Beach a year I believe after a cat4.

It really does not capture the terrifying nature of seeing it.

Looks like it still may be a Cat 1 inland.

A Cat 1 will knock trees onto your house, especially with the ground soaked from a ton of rain...
Be safe!
