So, Mister Thompson has invoked the Defense Production Act - Trub Lou - 05-19-2022

In an attempt to unscrew the pooch, he has directed manufacturers to prioritize getting "safe infant formula" from unspecified foreign sources onto shelves as fast as possible.  Rest assured that when this goes horribly awry, it will not be his fault, because he was careful to specify that only safe formula was to be discovered and supplied to the needy public. He was very clear about that. This was not his fault.  He could not have been expected to know.

Is that what the defense production act is for?  I would think it would be to ramp up or implement manufacturing here in American and not acquire from foreign sources.  Somebody needs to ask that new press secretary about it and she will get that blank stare and talk about global warming.

We don't trust Chinese drywall but we do trust Chinese export baby formula.
Sounds about right..

Our youngest we adopted from China.  I recall we bought some formula over there that was soy based and loaded with sugar.  They fed her that and congee at the orphanage.  I remember looking for beer over there too and it was an adventure.

Not that I am against doing what we can to keep babies fed, but is this really an appropriate use of the Defense Production Act?

I understand there's a shortage, but are babies going unfed?

Also, not a fan of them using this problem to justify more inspectors and regulations.

Made for people because it's sorta made from people.

Focusing all efforts on getting that Michigan Abbot Formula factory open and ramping up production is key. My understanding is the FDA shut that place down and it is sitting idle still.

Article says it's been shut down since February!! Obvious problem.

"Look, you know, the President — you know, you’ve heard us say this: The President understands the struggle of moms and dads and parents and caregivers and making sure that — you know, making sure that we get — a child has, you know, a healthy — a healthy — a healthy way of eating," Jean-Pierre responded, according to a White House transcript. "A healthy formula is — and safe — and safe formula — is our number one priority, which is why we’re — you know, which is why we have been very, very acutely aware of — of the process that we’ve initiated with the flyover and also the DPA.

"I don’t have a timeline for you yet," she continued. "We want to exp- — you know, make sure it goes very quickly, because it’s so critical. And we know what — what families are going through.
