100 years ago, a couple of guys in our high school science club gave a demonstation of reflective telescopes they had built. They used the cardboard tubes you get at the big box hardware stores for the body, and bought the eyepieces and mirrors. They even ground their mirrors for the reflectors. They had either 6 or 8" mirrors best I remember. That always interested me. Now that we've moved out to the country where it actually gets dark, its popped back in my mind. i went as far as googling kits but that's it. If I ever get caught up on my other projects/pipe dreams, I might get serious about it. A major downside is you don't have an aiming system, software to direct and aim it. You're on your own.

That sounds really cool. You mentioned darkness. Is darkness essential for the scope to work best?

The closer you live to large cities, the worse light pollution is. Telescopes work by drawing in light and reflecting them to the lens. The darker the skies, the clearer your object will be.

That stuff is easily added with a raspberry pi and some encoders or steppers.

Dude there are a shitload of phone apps that point out objects in the night sky. The rig I have is preprogrammed to track 44000 objects. So you don't need an expensive tracking rig.
