Wife and I are probably about 10 years out from retirement. For us that means finding a place close to the beach. We LOVE taking walks on the beach. We've vacationed all around Floribamas gulf coasts. We particularly love the Clearwater area (Madeira, Belleair, Indian Shores). We've also hit Orange Beach and Gulf Shores a bunch. One gulf beach area we have not experienced are Texas beaches. In fact, never even been to Texas. Well, it's time to explore that area as an option. We are in the process of planning a Corpus Christi (Port Aransas/Mustang Island) trip to see what Texas beaches and retirement home prices are like. Kids are excited about riding horses on the beach. We are excited because it seems like you can get more for your money in Texas closer to the beach than you can in Florida. Would love any input you all have to offer that have experience with this area.

Port A is a solid choice. I would not say the beaches are pretty north of there all the way to LA. FL is getting over priced with NY people invading. We are still free down here.

Hard to say what retirement accounts will look like in "real" dollars. We're at least ten years from the kids moving out, and I can't see changing houses before then, and another decade of work will probably be the minimum to even think about a countdown to retirement anyway. The wife just started on something closer to a full time job, which could accelerate things, but for now I figure that may just cover kids' school assistance and maybe something for weddings.
No input/experience on Tejas, other than it seems nice if you can stay away from the humid parts and the Austin crazies.

Man, even with the Jeep, driving it on sand would make the engineer in me shudder. Probably not rational.

Getting the kids all out of the house and through college is our goal line. Our first is starting next year! In 5 years the other 3 will join her. Looking forward to having one in college, a little frightening though I must say.

Financially, it's terrifying. I was thinking of trading my three white ones for some who can get more assistance. I need to at least look into getting them emancipated. The whole "must disclose parental finances" thing is weird.
